Get Certified to Charter with Online Courses

Are you unsure of what it takes to skipper a bareboat charter on your own? Believe it or not you can start gaining proficiency and confidence in the comfort of your own home with online interactive theory and training programs on NauticEd. Whether you have some sailing knowledge and background, or none at all, these courses can improve your knowledge and lead you on a path to yacht charter.
The founder and Global Education Director for NauticEd Sailing School, Grant Headifen, created the only online interactive sailing school recognized worldwide by yacht charter companies. Through these online courses you can gain proficiency and connect with an international network of NauticEd affiliated sailing schools to increase practical on-water experience.
Grant, a technology guy, explains, “A lot of theory these days is done online, from doctors to diving. I wanted to prove to people you can get the theory out of the way online.” As a new person to sailing, you will learn more in the free basic sail trim course than you will in a one-hour lesson out on the water, because you can focus on learning from a comfortable environment.

Grant says, “Your first day out on a sailboat you will spend a lot of time being intimidated. The captain is saying can’t you see the wind? Can’t you see it?” And in reality newbie sailors have a hard time grasping the concept of seeing the wind. But with the NauticEd Sailing Simulator (nicknamed NED) you can start to see the wind, how it hits the sail, and the effect it has on the sails and movement of the boat as you try every point of sail. NED is only one of the many interactive lessons that will demystify so many aspects of sailing.
There are a lot of sail theory books out there, but by taking courses through NauticEd you receive a more interactive experience. This is something you can do after you put the kids to bed, in your free time, at your own pace.
Charter Certification
Major charter companies all over the world recognize NauticEd courses. Grant worked with charter companies, asking them what they wanted to see in order to create a comprehensive certification that would open up opportunities for boat charter. The courses are bundled to provide specific education to gain proficiency in bareboat charting, and they help sailors begin to build their sailing resume online. According to Scott Farquharson of Dream Yacht Charter, "If all of our charter clients were like NauticEd students, we'd be in heaven."
A sailing resume is a lengthy document that shows sailing experience, and is required by most charter companies around the world. With NauticEd, each course completed is automatically added to a personal online sailing resume, a living document that individuals can continue to build, both through taking and completing course work online and through practical application. NauticEd has made it easy, and there is even a free iPad app to help you log your time out on the water. And when you sign up for a charter, the company can pull down your resume and see your qualifications.

An extra layer of authority can be added by going to a NauticEd approved instructor and demonstrating skills, in order to add a verified proficiency stamp to your certification.
You don't have to be a beginner to use NauticEd. These courses are great for all levels of sailing. Whether you are a new sailor trying to learn the basics, or an experienced sailor who has never chartered a boat, the approach helps individuals move up the skill ladder. The courses are set up in modules and tailored to the needs of the student. The entire curriculum is designed to help anyone who is intimidated about any aspect of sailing or chartering. Student Albert Dworkin says, "It's impressed me that although my sailing experience spans over 65 years, I always learn something new when going to the website.”
Ranks And Levels
There are a number of ranks a student can achieve through demonstrating online proficiency with theory and coursework. These include Qualified Crew, Skipper, Bareboat Charter Master, and Captain. However on the water experience is essential in order to progress through the various levels of each rank. For more information, visit the NauticEd certification page.
Hands-On Learning
NauticEd partners with a wide variety of sailing schools and individuals around the world in order to provide accredited practical training. Keith Winstein, of the MIT Nautical Association says, "At MIT's sailing program, we use the NauticEd Skipper course to make sure everybody gets a good understanding of the fundamentals before taking practical classes. It's a great timesaver and lets the sailors learn the classroom material at their own pace."
By attending an accredited school and proving proficiency, the student will receive the verified proficiency mark on their certificate. While not necessary in order to charter a boat, it helps achieve stronger credentials.
One of the best parts about the NauticEd partner schools is that after a student goes through the training, they can rate the school and the instructor. That allows Grant to monitor the quality of schools around the world through the feedback of students.
Grant has offered online programs since 2006 and continues to grow the course selection, approved schools, and partner charter companies that recognize this growing international certification system. “The vision of NauticEd is to be the most recognized and accessible way to learn to sail,” says Grant. “The accessibility is the key.”
